A Dream. A Drive. & A Result.
The Dream.
Last week I dreamed that I was back at my childhood home in Sudan, I was bare foot, the house was empty, but I was over joyed. I was my age today, which made it even better. I started running around the house, exploring this beautiful haven that I miss so dearly. Everything was the same, even the sky, I looked up, and it was a beautiful Sudan sky, between the afternoon & sunset, which was my favorite time of day back then.
But one this was drastically different, the front "lawn" area of the house. It was not the golden sand I grew up with, it was a large spread of giant green leafs. Not grass, leafs. Big, green, lush. I put one foot in, it was soft to my bare feet. I smiled and ran across it as happily as I was a few moments before, then I started running back around the house.
Then I woke up, happy to have briefly visited my childhood home, but sad that I was no longer there.
The Long Drive.
A few days later, I was driving across state to visit my family, I had my mp3 on shuffle. I don't remember what the first song was, but the 2nd one was a beautiful Sudanese song by Mohammed Al-Sunni, I thought "oh that's nice" because it reminded me of the dream I had a couple of days ago. The next song was U2's "I run to you", followed by another Sudanese song. I promptly picked up the mp3 player, and switched it to an all Sudanese playlist. The sun was high & strong, the weather warm and calming, and songs from my homeland soothing me on this long drive.
At that point I came to a realization, the current album I'm working on, "Novella", has references to Sudan, but no "direct beats" from my heritage. I've always wanted to do something with a Nubian beat, & I wasn't entirely happy with how one of the songs had come out. So I decided to pay attention to the messages, and represent my Sudanese & Nubian heritage by reworking one of my songs to the Nubian beat, and I'm not surprised that it worked (at least in my opinion)
The Muse Result.
Last Saturday I decided to test this theory. I set up my digital recorder & microphone, brought out my guitar & djembe, and recorded a new version of the song "Land & Sea".
Here is a little teaser to how that sounded!
Let me know what you think?
If anything, this post is to encourage you to pay attention to the messages being sent to you, don't dismiss the little things, because sometimes they can lead up to some really cool results.
Don't forget! Tomorrow (Tuesday Oct/2) I will release a new "The Making of Novella" vLog, #7 the Oud session. :)
