Novella & The Irish Sudanese American influence

Novella
This past week I released Part 2 of "The People In The Blue Desert" vLog, it took some co-ordination, but I was able to have my good, International artist & Baltimore legend Marc Evans to come into the studio. AND I was able to bring in my good friend & Baltimore's Mid-Eastern percussionist Jonathan Fell. It was a fun night.

The Irish Sudanese American Influence

When I sit to think of my songs, and reflect on how & why I write the way I write, I remember 3 disting things that have influenced, inspired, and opened my eyes.
A Lyric, A Song, & An Album.

The Irish Lyric
I was about 16 years old, I was having a conversation with my English Teacher at the end of the school day, as we were discussing songs & poetry. During that conversation he says to me "Listen to this line, I don't know who wrote it but I think you would appreciate its beauty, the singer says 'I see stones sat in your eyes, I see thorns twist in your side, but I wait for you'".
2 years later, I am here in the United States, the radio is on, low and behold those lyrics are sung at me through the radio station. I froze, & just sat there until I hear the announcer say the name of this amazing artist. Little did I know, I would become a U2 fan, still am to this day.
As I strive to write lyrics that one day someone would find iconic enough to encourage another young writer to use as a stepping stone.

The Sudanese Song
I was about 17 years old, I had just started to learn to play simple chords on the guitar by my Sudanese friend, & amazing guitarist Bani Wani at The Sudanese Hut in Alexandria, Egypt. That year a singer by the name of Mohammed Fouad release an album. The last song of that album was "Al-Layel Al-Hady" (The Calm Night) by Sudanese artist Sharhabeel Ahmed, but M. Fouad didn't credit him, he simply said "Nubian Folklore".
That pissed me off greatly, SO with my limited guitar skills I was determined to learn "Al-Layel Al-Hady" & correct this notion. I had set up one of my very first shows in Alexandria's Fencing club, I put together a small band of my friends, and we practiced & hit the stage.
The show was a disaster, to the point that I actually stopped at mid-song & said "that's it, lets go home".
As I got up and was about to walk out of the stage, the small crowd sitting at front started to should at me "Where are you going? we want to hear Al-layel Al-hady!!". Apparently they heard us practicing it that day. I was shocked they even knew. So I went back up on stage with my guitar & sang it to them, to my pleasant surprise, they were all singing along & it was the saver of the show.
I then made sure to correct everyone's notion about the song & told them that its an original song by a Sudanese artist called Sharhabeel Ahmed, to which they were excited to know.
Since then its been my mission to be that "positive" clear image of Sudan.

The American Album
I was still 17, and I recall a day that one of my cousin's friends (who were older than I am) came up to me and said "You listen to Western music, right?", and I enthusiastically said "Yes, Yes I do", he then said "here", he then gave me a cassette tape with a peculiar photo & a band name that I couldn't quit figure out how to pronounce, and then he said "I don't really like this tape, but if you like it you can keep it".
I immediately flipped this tape over to read the names of the songs, and one of the titles was "As my guitar lies bleeding in my arms" and I remember thinking to my self "could you say that? is that allowed in poetry/songs?". Needless to say I loved that album, true at the time I didn't  understand many of the dark references in the songs, & I think by me taking some of the lyric literally made me love it even more. I even went to my English teach with questions about "is this allowed?", and he told me "Everything is allowed, you write what feels right for you, everything doesn't have to rhyme in the A.A. B.B., you write what you WANT to write".
My writing changed DRAMATICALLY since then, even my English teacher noticed and I remember him telling me "When you get famous, you will be more known for your lyrics than anything else". To this day, I try my best to make him proud.
The album was "These Days" by Bonjovi, which I still listen to, to this day.

Novella & Sudan Centric

 Novella
The song "People of The Blue Desert" featured TWO vocal artists, so lucky YOU, that song's vLog is split into parts 1 & 2. Last Wednesday I released Part 1, which features the lovely Armenian artist Teporah who plays the role of "Angel/Mother" in the Novella storyline.

Sudan Centric
I have been humbled & honored to have so much support in my musical endeavors from my kinsmen and kinswomen of Sudan. I'm especially proud from two recent personal events.

#1: Being accepted into the exclusive Zol & Zola Club, which was founded by the inspiring young Sudanese Wafa Elamin, her TEDxYouth @ Khartoum talk about "Positive Thinking" is what started this movement. The club will act as a platform for talented scientists, artists, entrepreneurs and thinkers to use their individualized talents to promote a new Africa; a strong, vibrant and united people.
I can't wait to start interacting with all these talented individuals :)

#2: I am honored to announce that my album cover will be drawn by the very talented Sudanese artist Iman Shaggag. Who is the founder/designer of the online Sudan Artist Gallery. The photo of the cover will be taken by my dear & talented friend Jennifer Torres-Johnson of JT Photo & Design. Who's work is featured with acclaimed artist Imogean Heap.

I am blown away by this..the fact that I am lucky enough to know so many talented individuals in my life, who are helping prove that we CAN all work together in harmony, & truly are Prototypes not Stereotypes, is just very awesome in my opinion :)

Novella Mode

It is crunch time.
For the remainder of May, I have 2 studio sessions a week, I'm planning on getting Novella mostly (if not all) mixed by the end of this month. Which is why I made sure that I all my Novella vLogs for this month have been uploaded and schduled for release every Wednesday :)

My Thorns, if I were a Desert Rose

Welcome to my Muse Oasis! :)
To be an "Indie Artist", is actually a magnificent social status in my opinion. The universe knows this, which is why when ever you try to become an "Indie", it will totally TEST you, to make sure that you are worthy.
In a recent conversation with fellow indies, the topic of the song "Desert Rose" came up, and in a very humble way, I feel like my musical styling is pretty much that beautiful song, a bit of East & a touch of West.

As I was having one of my long walks the other day, many flowers were blooming, the sun was shining, and it reminded me of the "Desert Rose" song. Through that I realized that there are a couple of "Thorns" that I would like to mention to you :)

Thorn #1
This is a pleasant Thorn actually, on Friday of last week (April/26/2013) my song "Shurkan My Totem" was featured in The Music Biz Weekly Podcast EP# 107. Ironically, one of the presenter's website is "Thorny Bleeder". He does several podcast that give great advice to indie musicians, and his DIY Daily PodCast promotes positivity for all the DIY-ers out there, its really nice.

Thorn # 2
My song "Labyrinth", you may have heard me talk about this song before, it really has been a Thorn in my side. I had to re-write it 3 times, and even after that, it still didn't sound "Right" to me. Being the Arab Capricorn that I am, I just kept going at it head strong, with extreme force, but nothing came to me. Then I remembered my dear friend Sahffi, she has this peaceful approach to her music. So I thought to myself "Well, think like a Shaffi", & it worked :).
I picked up my Sudan colored guitar pedal (The Dez-RT), alchemized a haunting mellow sound, sat in my room for the rest of that day, and BAM! I found the missing elements. I even shared what I did with several of my close friends, and they all gave me the same reaction..which was a roaring "YES!!".

I think if I start coming against any other challenges in the future, I should go into my "Desert Rose" mode, and try to gently clip those thorns, try it some time, and let me know if it works for you too :)

Desert Symposiums & Novella vLogs

Its going to be a most excellent week! I assure you :)

The 9 Series | The Metro Gallery | April 24 | 7pm
This Wednesday I will be part of The 9 Songwriter series. The audience gets to here 9 different singer/songwriters (including me), which is over 30 songs, in the span of about 2 hours, its really a fun eclectic night of acoustic live music. Its only $10, how awesome is that.

The Desert Symposium
Is my monthly newsletter, which is free to join AND you actually get to download a whole 5 song EP for free just for joining. I call it a Symposium because its not set up for me to talk AT you, but to talk WITH you. Twice (so far) this has been told to me! Is it true?

For the past (almost) 2 years, I have been working "Novella", my upcoming concept album, I've always wanted to make one, and wanted to make one that was easy to follow, because in my head a "Concept" album, automatically meant a "Story" album.

I was talking with my friend Jon Patton of Midway Fair, & I learned from him that a "Concept" album doesn't necessarily have to be a "Story". The example he gave me was The Who's "Sell Out" album, that the album is supposed to sound like your channel surfing through a radio.

When I mentioned that "Novella" is going to be a full story, from beginning to end, with narrations, and artists singing as different characters, he called it an "Opera". This is the second time some one has called this album an Opera or an Operetta.
Could  this be true? Have I accidentally created an Operetta album, instead of a concept album?
What do you think?

The Making of Novella: End of Autumn

The "End of Autumn" session marks an important point in my Novella project, I get to work again with my musical brother from another mother Seeno Merobsho, as well as put the final touches on TWO songs of the album, "Shukran my totem", & "Labyrinth".

Also I ended up using a different format with the vLog, as well as try using annotation for the first time, so check it out and let me know what you think.

Its been a great few weeks for NOVELLA, yesterday I was in the studio almost the entire day. Rob was a trooper for bearing with me so long, and Seeno came in and blew us away as usual.

We finished up TWO songs recording wise..woho..those two are "Labyrinth" & "Shukran My Totem", I have samples of "Shukran" & other Novella tunes up on my Baker Artist Awards profile, check it out and leave me comments and stars :D

The Making of Novella : The Narration Session

The last october novella session :(

This Thursday is the last recording session in October :(
Due to Rob going on tour with his band ilyAIMY, I will not be able to do any recording until winter...damn.

But there is much work to do, like graphics for the lyric book, the CD design, the new website, arranging the winter sessions to get as much done before we get snowed in :).

But don't fear, I will have "Making of" vLogs until the end of the October,  as promised! woho.

The last October session.
The session will be an all day affair, exciting & hopefully not too tiring. I will be laying down djembe tracks for 2 songs, then lay down final vocals for two songs, then my buddy Seeno will join us to lay down his harmony vocals on two songs, & by the end of the night, we should have 2 songs officially DONE!!.

Tuesday will remain the day of release for the rest of this month, so that's good news :)
This week it will be "The Narrations", you get a behind the scene of Kevin "Koan" Johnson Jr laying down his narrations for the album, it was a fun session. Make sure to catch up on all previous sessions before the release of the new one tomorrow!

Authenticity is Awesome

In case you had not gotten my newsletter, I wanted to let you know, that I love Autumn :). Most people are creative in Spring, they see the season as a symbol of starting over & what not. For me, its Autumn. I haven't tried to question it, or find out why, all I know is its my favorite season of the year, and I always end up doing/making something, & it has started.

This past weekend Shaffi & I went to Ocean City for our goatFISH interview on Live Lixx at Sixx, we had a good time, got to meet up with some friends and had dinner, but we also had a mission.

Recording the ocean for "Lucid"

In my upcoming album "Novella", I have a song called "Lucid", which is played on a harp, & since the song is about the "Ocean Girl" character, I want to add some ocean sounds in the background. SO, Sahffi planted the idea of me recording the sounds of the ocean when we go to Ocean City..I was on the fence, but then I was speaking with my graphic designer of the album, and she told me that there are people who can tell by the sound of the waves, roughly, where that ocean/sea is located. Add to that, the song is being sung by Sahffi, who was raised near that ocean, it became a no brainier.

It was entertaining to say the least, we parked the car, I hooked up a microphone to my ZoomR24, & we walked down to the ocean, using my phone's LED as a flash light, and we recorded about 7 minutes of Ocean waves crashing into the shore! it was EPIC!
Many thanks to Sahffi for rolling up her jeans and going into the cold water for art!

goatFISH + landSEA = Ocean City

Today Sahffi & I are going to be at Ocean City, MD. We are being interviewed on 98.1 FM for the show Live Lixx at Sixx. The goatFISH interview & performance will be broadcasted live on their website :)

Another mission I have will be to record the sound of the ocean, yup you heard that right, I will be taking my Zoom R24 with us to capture a live recording of the ocean for the song "Lucid" (which is next Tuesday's vLog by the way), I think it would be more authentic then just finding a random ocean sound on the internet, plus, it would be a cool triva for the album :D.

The Musical Weekend

It has been a nicely busy musical weekend, got to play shows, and set up future show, met some cool people, and hopefully this might start me on a very interesting "novella" related path, we shall see.
I'm telling you, this concept album I'm working on is truly allowing me to think out side of the box, I'm loving it, and I can't WAIT to finish recording it, I will miss the process, thats for sure, but hopefully, with a finished product, I would be able to do more with it, so I'm pressing on.

vLogs
As promised I have caught up on my "Making of Novella" vlogs, I was able to put together the 4 sessions that I recently recorded, which include Violin, Oud, Harp, & Narrations. Instead of bombarding you with all 4 at once, I'm going to release one every week. If you'd like, you can let me know in the comments below, which day do you think would be a good day to release a weekly video for you?
Hopefully by the time I release those 4, I would have made more sessions, to release after that :)

Super Novella Post

LUCID
I'm SO excited to say that yesterday we had a Harp session, yes you read that right! The talented Anastasia Pike did some awesome work for the song Lucid. The session was totally saved by Sahffi who was kind enough to join us & help write the correct notes for Ana to play, it was quite and adventure. Rob was the awesome sound engineer as usual, and was able to capture the beautiful sound of the harp, it was a BLAST!

I know I have been a bit behind, but I do have a few vLogs for you, including the Violin session, the Oud session, the Narration session, and of course the Harp session. I will try to get as many of this done in the next few days as possible.

I'm VERY excited to say that I have just confirmed a photo shoot date with the lovely Jennifer of JT Photo & Design, & what's even cooler, is that we will get to shoot in Autumn! YAY! I love the Autumn season as some of you know. Since this album is so symbolic, I couldn't think of better time of year to do it.

Novella Updates + goatFISH festivaties

Its September 14th, and things are moving along nicely, so far :)
It has been a challenge the past few weeks to get things coordinated with all the talented musicians I'm having on this album. Yesterday Rob & I had a mixed session for a couple of the tunes, & I've been listening to them & deciding of what I like & don't like.

Also yesterday Kevin "Koan" Johnson Jr, poet & author of EarthSalt, came in & did his narrations for the album, it was very cool, and ZOOMed by fairly smoothly, I'm telling you know, it will be the SHORTIEST vLog I would've made to date...until I start posting on my KeeK Page.
It also looks like I will be helping Kevin record an audio version of his book EarthSalt, that will be FUN! I can't wait.

I have a harpist scheduled for next week, for Sahffi's song, once that happens, then I would need to get Piano & then I would have all my main instruments, that would be awesome!. I also have a djembe session next week, so I need to get cracking on my beats.

Did I also mention that my duo goatFISH is playing two festivals this weekend
Saturday we play at Lake Montebello Fall Festival in Baltimore & Sunday we play ArtsFest in Solomon Island. Yea! its going to be a crazy few days for sure, but I won't have it any other way.

The Making of : The Horn Sessions

Sticky Bear of Moonliscious came in with all his cool toys and layed down some awesome horn tracks for two of Novella tracks: Labyrinth & Angel/Mother.
"Labyrinth" has gone from being one of my difficult tunes to one of my favorits, I had to re-write this song 3 times until I finally settled on its current structure, & by adding the Clarinet & Saxophone made it even better.
It was a fun session check it out.
